We were stunned when every single child drew a rectangle, gridded in according to the number of rows and columns for the base of each figure, and then represented the prism’s height as a number in each square. They had recalled the top plan view representation from the previous year and used this with ease. They now had no difficulty understanding that the number of squares in each row and the number of rows in their grids represented the length and the width of the figure; and that the number in each square, which was the same for every square on the base represented the height, or the number of layers in each figure.
